1 Acre, Satbari, Chattarpur
This was my first project stepping into the world of regenerative agriculture and a deep dive at that too. After working for almost 3 years at India’s first Internet Radio Station as Program Manager and a full time musician/DJ/synthesizer builder, i quit my job and with that my hopes of earning a decent living through music. Not because it would have been extremely difficult or i didn’t think it could happen but because the extremely fast deteriorating climate and world around me had me very nervous for mine and everyone’s
life ahead.
I had been practicing vegetable gardening on my rooftop and tiny backyard already for a few months prior to starting the farm. The tipping point was when a lot of research culminated into a defined thought process for how regenerative agriculture can be scaled across the country using a modularised approach using systems development. Another thought that made me jump head first into starting my own regenerative agriculture farm was that if one is able to market their produce well while living in an urban city, a very decent living can be generated from even 1 acre of land.
Although the project couldn’t continue beyond 11 months, I was able to establish successfully almost 3 crop cycles and a test run of 100+ varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers which was all sold in a CSA subscription model to our 30 customers. This project was a test pit for trialing concepts such as a Semi-passive solar Greenhouse nursery which doubled up as our administrative and field office, execution of a pond and some other rainwater harvesting structures which turned out to be really necessary interventions as the farm lied at the lowest elevation at the end of a long farm road which resulted in a lot of water coming in to the property, no-dig farming methodology executed with a triumphant success since it showcased how efficiently one can grow vegetables intensively without being bogged down by the pressures of weeding and tilling and my initial training in systems design for managing and rehabilitating landscapes while maintaining a whole systems approach and striving for economic viability.
